This is an abridged 2018 reprint of the 1962 edition of "The Fable of the Bees." Originally published in 1714, this work caused great controversy in eighteenth-century British society by challenging the prevailing positive view of human nature and arguing that vice was essential to the development of a capitalist economy. Mandeville's ideas on economic thought, including the division of labor and the concept of the "invisible hand," predated Adam Smith's more detailed exploration of these concepts by seventy years. In the 20th century, economist John Maynard Keynes referenced Mandeville to illustrate his theory that unemployment could be attributed to a lack of consumer spending, also known as the paradox of thrift, which was central to Keynes's own theory of effective demand. However, at the time of its publication, Mandeville's work was considered scandalous and controversial. This abridged edition contains a full facsimile of the original 1962 edition and is not produced using Optical Recognition software.
